Happy February! 2023 is well underway - the Christmas hangover is long gone and we’re all back into out routines. Unfortunately, for some of us that means that our New Year’s resolutions for the gym have been left behind too and we’ve slipped back into our old habits. But we’re here to help with 4 quick tips to help you get back on track with your goals.
1) Reassess your resolutions
There’s something about the clock striking 12 on January 1st that makes us ultra ambitious and motivated. As a result, we often end up setting goals that were never going to be sustainable once reality set back in. So firstly take a second to check that you haven’t set yourself up for failure.
2) Keep it minimal
Now that you’ve evaluated the goals you set for yourself at the beginning of the year, it’s time to rip the bandaid off and get started. However, you don’t want to go full pelt from the start with running 10K 5 times a week and hitting 15-20 sets of barbell back squats every leg day. When you’re trying to get back in to your gym routine, the key is to find a comfortable rhythm. That’s how it becomes a habit. If you go in all guns blazing and you find yourself barely able to walk and having to take an extended break, that can really derail habit formation.
3) Have an accountability partner
Social pressure can be a very motivating force for us making an accountability partner a great tool for getting yourself back on track. If you have a friend, co-worker or family member who also wants to get into a solid gym routine - team up! You can work together to share how your gym workouts are going and the meals you’re eating on a daily basis. Knowing you have to check-in with someone can help you make better choices.
4) Celebrate you gym wins
Successfully went to the gym 4 times a week for a whole month? Celebrate it! It doesn’t have to be big - buy yourself some new gym accessories that make you feel good or go out for a nice meal with a friend. Anything that makes you feel good. Celebrating you success, however small, fills you with a sense of pride and happiness. This helps to keep working towards the next small steps, eventually helping you meet your goals.
